CEEEuronews opens office in Baku
On November 17, Euronews launched its new local office in Baku. The opening ceremony was attended by media representatives, diplomats, and government officials. Speaking at the event, Euronews Chairman of the Board Pedro Vargas David stated that the outlet has “always maintained a balanced approach toward Azerbaijan” and has “faced pressure for this position.”
David expressed his satisfaction with opening a European media office in Baku-a move that has raised questions among independent journalists and press freedom observers. Since November 2023, Azerbaijan has witnessed an unprecedented wave of repression against independent press. Over the past two years, nearly 30 journalists have been arrested, many from leading independent outlets such as AbzasMedia, Toplum TV, and Meydan TV. Critics note that Euronews has in recent years produced several promotional-style videos praising: Azerbaijan’s natural landscape; Its oil and gas wealth; Its economic achievements. This narrative aligns closely with the Azerbaijani government’s state messaging. RELATED
